If you are using a breakaway kit like the Hopkins Engager Trailer BreakAway Kit # 20099 or # 20400 that features a sealed battery in an enclosure then you can mount it sideways if that is a better mounting solution on your trailer. To connect an auxiliary battery, I recommend using 10 gauge wire, like # 10-2-1 (per foot) to connect the 12V power wire on your trailer side 7-way connector to a junction box like # 38656. From there, you can run more of the same wire from the positive side of the battery to the same post where you previously connected the 12V wire on the junction box. The Modulite box of part # 118617 only draws power from the battery if the turn, brake or tail lights are activated with a trailer connected. If you are not using one those functions the wiring harness is not getting power so it will not drain the vehicle's battery.

While you can add a second battery to power lights, this is going to require a second, 12 volt auxiliary battery; this is the same concept you were thinking of but a breakaway system battery isn't going to have the power or amp hours needed for your lights.
